Ahead of Saturday’s elective national convention, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has backed the aspiration of veteran journalist, Kola Ologbondiyan, for the position of the National Publicity Secretary of the party.

The House Caucus, had on Tuesday assessed aspirants for various national offices of the party. It was learnt that they insisted that the position of the National Publicity Secretary is highly specialized and should be handled by a professional.

Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, who was also Special Adviser on Media to former Senate President David Mark, and Barr. Kabiru Usman, a legal practitioner are two main aspirants currently contesting for the position of the party’s spokesperson.

However sources at the closed hearing hinted that the caucus panel chaired by Deputy Minority Leader, Hon Chukwuka Onyema, screened the aspirants.

It was learnt that they were grilled on their proficiency and preparedness for the position which requires high level media and publicity expertise, especially given that the party is on top gear for the 2019 general elections.

The source added that the members were impressed by Ologbondiyan’s presentation who was said to have proffered “credible and operable points on how to urgently reengineer the PDP publicity to effectively reposition the party’s image ahead of the general election.”

The source who pleaded anonymity said upon listening to the two aspirants, the caucus directly advised other aspirants for the position of the National Publicity Secretary to reconsider their aspirations.

“We have accessed them in line with their areas of aspirations and we value the quality of discussions we had with them and our intention is to ensure that we have round pegs in round holes,” the source said.

He added “For instance, on the position of the National Publicity Secretary, we considered issues of professional experience and proficiency in media and publicity. Don’t forget that the holder of that office will be the face of the party and its direct image maker.

“You know we are going for a general election and we need a very vibrant and highly proficient publicity. We can only guarantee that if we have a thoroughbred party man, who is also a media professional to handle the position.

“That was the major reason the caucus has backed Ologbondiyan and advised other aspirants, to reconsider their aspirations in the general interest of our great party.

“Ologbondiyan impressed the caucus with his planned programmes to reengineer our publicity and reposition the party’s image as we get set for the general election. That is what should be important to all members of the party at this time”.
