…Says former president party’s chief campaigner
The presidency yesterday reacted to a recent statement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo calling on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in the coming 2019 general election.
According to the presidency, Obasanjo’s statement is helping the ruling party to win the 2019 general elections.
Speaking at a programme organised by Buhari Media Support Group and a Coalition of other Buhari/ Osinbajo Support Groups, the senior special adviser to the president on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen Ita Enang, described Obasanjo as the foremost campaigner for the APC in the 2019 general elections.
“The president emeritus, Obasanjo’s letter has helped us to work on our challenges and win the coming elections.
“Former President Obasanjo is the chief campaigner for the APC in the 2019 general elections,” Enang said, while reacting to a statement made by the president, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Murtala Mohammed.
Mohammed had stated that the reactions that followed Obasanjo’s letter had helped the youths to be enlightened on the activities of the Buhari -led administration.
Meanwhile, the senior special assistant to the president on Political Matters, Hon Gideon Samani, has said President Muhammadu Buhari has been transformed from a military to a civilian leader, adding that it was the reason why many people now believe in him.
Samani, who made this comment at the programme organised by Buhari support groups, said many people have come to believe in the president because of his achievements.
“The president has changed from a military route to a civilian. He believes in the rule of law. The president does not interfere in the legislative arm, nor in the judiciary,” Samani said.
According to the president’s political aid, Buhari is now xing Nigeria.
“The damage was done in the past. The economy was bastardised. It is easy to destroy but di cult to build. All of us present here should carry this information about what our president and the vice president are doing back home. They have achieved a lot in security, ghting corruption, economic diversi cation and social welfare. We thank God for these leaders. Those releasing statements are blackmailers and saboteurs. People all over Nigeria know the truth,” Samani said.
Corroborating Samani’s position, the director- general of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Bayo Onanuga, said he was impressed at what he saw, adding that the problem of Nigeria was inadequate information.
“Without proper information, we can’t address our issues and information is lacking,” he said.
Obasanjo Joins Coalition For
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday formally registered as a member of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), LEADERSHIP Friday has gathered.
Obasanjo had, in a statement penultimate Tuesday, advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest in the 2019 presidential election and advocated a new political platform to upstage the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obasanjo said a Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) was necessary because, according to him, both the APC and the PDP had failed Nigerians.
The coalition was formally launched in Abuja on Wednesday with former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, and his Osun State counterpart, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, as interim leaders.
Members of the APC and PDP, civil societies, women groups and the youths were all present at the launch of the coalition.
And to show his full support to the movement, Obasanjo formally registered and obtained a membership card of the coalition in his country home, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The former president’s registration in the ‘third force’ team followed a visit by the interim leadership of the coalition to Ogun State.
Obasanjo lled the membership registration form given to him by Oyinlola at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The acting chairman of the coalition, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, had on Wednesday stated that the mandate of the movement was to salvage Nigeria from bad governance.
“To say that we are legitimising OBJ’s legacies is a bit o the mark. There is no one who can fault the issues raised in Obasanjo’s letter. Forget the messenger; let’s discuss the message.
“What he has done is to stir us from our slumber to the reality of what is happening in Nigeria to take charge and take action. Are there no other leaders sitting around and watching how things are going? I think we should give some kudos to him for being able to address Nigerians on the ills of the society which require attention,” he said.
