Spain’s Rafael Nadal made history by winning a record 10th French Open title with victory over Stan Wawrinka in the Paris final. Nadal, 31, came through 6-2 6-3 6-1 against the Swiss third seed to claim his 15th major title. He becomes the first man or woman in the Open era to have won a Grand Slam tournament 10 times. Wawrinka, 32, was beaten in a major final for the first time after winning his first three. Onukogu Kanayochuqu Jubal Fast rising tennis youngster Joseph Imeh got the revenge he promised Abdulmumuni Babalola, when he dispatched him 6-3, 6-3 in the first singles of the NCC Tennis League opener in Abuja over the weekend. Imeh, playing for Lagos-based Team Muller, was thumped by Babalola in straight sets during the 2017 CBN Senior Championships in and vowed to get one back over Babalola the next time they meet. The rising star, who had a winning Davis Cup debut for Nigeria last month in Egypt, also played a major role in securing an upset victory over Team Civil Defence, winners of the inaugural edition in 2015. Both players failed to engineer a break in the first set, with just one break point coming to the Central American in the eighth game when he was 40- 30 up. The ensuing tie-break decider saw the un-seeded world No 755 Guatemalan race to a 5-0 lead, putting pressure on Hemery to make a number of unforced errors, before sealing the set 7-2. Top Spanish tennis coach, Jose Velasco, has rounded off his four-week coaching visit to Nigeria at the Lagos Country Club with a number of junior national players getting the latest techniques to step-up their game. Prominent among the players are Serena Teluwo and Reya Holmes who are using the programme as part of build-up to the ITF/CAT U-12 African Junior Championship scheduled for Casablanca, Morocco in September. While Serena is already assured of her place in the tournament which would feature about 80 players from 20 countries, Reya is an alternate player for Nigeria, having missed out of the qualifiers held in Lagos in April through injury while on preparation in London. Former junior national team invitees, Filippo Trombi, Lolade Holmes, Gideon and Olamide Aluko are the others that took part in the programme which include personal and group sessions.
