Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has called for increased youth participation in politics ahead of the 2015 general elections.
With more than 50 per cent of the country’s population under the age of 25, Tambuwal, at a youth forum held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said the youth have the numbers to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape to their taste.
The Speaker, who was represented by his special adviser on youth development, Etsu Umar, said the youths have the power not only to determine the outcome of 2015 but to also rid the country of incompetent leaders.
Tambuwal however expressed regret that democracy was being stifled at the grassroots and local government levels.
He said: “Ordinary, the local government or councillor level should be the right avenue for an average youth seeking political office to begin his career. But unfortunately, they are denied participation even at that level.”
