We Did Not Confiscate Local Rice, Says Kano Customs

Customs area comptroller in charge of Kano and Jigawa Compt. Matheis Abutu Onoja has dismisses allegations that the rice confiscated in one of the warehouse in Kano state was locally made.

Compt. Onoja said what happen is that, they got intelligent report concerning one wire house around Dawanau in Dawakin Tofa local government area, when they get there they find bags of smuggling rice, they are mandated by the law to seal any warehouse that have prohibited items.

Adding that there is no crime committed in raiding the warehouse. If it is local rice, professionally the officers would not even have carry the rice, from that place, everybody can get allegation to be able to get sympathy from the public or who want to listen, the operation   has done in conjunction with military and it’s not true anybody that said is local rice confiscated.

Recall that last month, Customs in Kano state confiscated tons of rice kept in warehouses by traders at Dawanau area along Danbatta road, in the state.

He said this while briefing journalists on the allegations just as he restated that rice has been banned from coming into this country through land boarders, while advising that if anyone wants to import rice, it can brought through designated ports stressing that rice will only be cleared in Kano  by Customs if it came through two major inland containers terminals that can bring containers from port.

Compt. Abutu explained that customs discovered that some peoples decide to smuggle rice through boarder, customs have been permit to seize smuggle rice and other prohibited items if found any were.

Compt. Abutu added that the relationship with business peoples in his area command Kano and Jigawa is cordial, they established good rapour with them, they are holding customs community relation stakeholders meeting with them every quarterly in the year the attendance and contribution is a testimony of the good relation they have with them. They came in large and participate actively.

The area command Comptroller said Customs take anti corruption issue serious previous administration in custom never Condon corruption that’s reason why Anti corruption and transparency unit has been established in customs with headquarters in Abuja and zonal headquarters in Kano to monitor Northwest, particularly Kano.
