Wife of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has assured physically challenged persons in the state that her husband, Godwin Obaseki has them at heart and will show special interest for Edo citizens with special cases.
She made the statement when she played host to the physically challenged/visually impaired, blind and deaf students of Ihogbe secondary school at the APC ICT data collation center yesterday in Benin.
According to her, ‘’you are all a special people. Don’t let that word ‘special’ be interpreted in a negative sense. I have listened to all that you have said and you have all proven that there is ability in you. But I want to reassure you that my husband has you all at heart. He said I should tell you that when he is elected in this September 10 governorship election, he will continue from where Comrade Adams Aliu would have stopped for your care and good treatment’’, she said.
She stated further that she will join hands with her husband to see that all that the students have tabled as their request before her to her husband is given due attention saying, ‘’ I am moved by your boldness and courage for not giving up hope despite what you have been through’’, adding, we all have been and do face different challenges just that some are lesser than others, ‘’You know we are all special in the eye of God and his love for us all supersede every other love’’, she said.
She maintained that she will see to it through close collaboration with her husband to ensure that more of them are appointed into government position so that their voices would be heard. In her words “I will encourage him to appoint more of you so that there will be good representation in order for your views and interest to be heard at all cost’’.
In addition, she announced the adoption of Miss Stacy Abhulimen, 28, Silver Gold Medalist in the last Paralympics she was the only Nigerian among Team Nigeria who joined the ‘Special Olympics World Game in 2011 with 176 participating countries.
The Principal of Ihogbe Secondary School, Deacon Irogbe Ikponwonsa said he feel very elated and appreciative of what he has seen so far, adding: ”There are some persons in the society who do not even know we exist or even have the heart to care for us. All we can say is thank you and may victory be yours in all your efforts”.
The Edo state Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Mr Ebose Henry who in a speech earlier during the get together said they were particularly glad and happy for the show of concern demonstrated by Mrs. Obaseki towards their welfare saying: “This award we are presenting to your husband is a further testimony of his outstanding performance which has further confirmed our support for him with our votes which can never be in doubt and also we will ensure that he emerges the winner in the election by God’s grace.
Henry reiterated further that before the comrade Governor, Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, there was nothing like walk way and other facilities for the visually impaired in Edo state.
His words: “We have had occasion where some of our members have been ran over by vehicles due largely to none availability of basic social amenities which we are now enjoying under the outgoing government though we are convinced that when your husband emerged more will be done to support us so that we can fit into the society very well’’, he stated.
He however appealed to the APC candidate to help sponsor an executive bill when he emerge as governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki for the establishment of a commission that will protect the spectrum of rights of persons with disabilities in Edo state.
