Kebbi State deputy governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai ha commended the decision of federal government to flag off quiller birds and grasshoppers control, in order to stop the migrating birds and insects from destroying crops in the state.
The Deputy Governor made this known to newsmen in his sallah message to people of the state in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.
He stated that the quiller birds have been sighted in large quantity migrating to Nigeria from the Republic of Niger.
“Quiller birds and grasshoppers have been sighted in large quantity and in fact this is the period they migrate to Nigeria. I am happy that the Minister of a agriculture has taken the bull by the horn , very soon they are going to flag off the control in Kebbi because kebbi is the hub of farming in Nigeria.’’
According to him , the quiller birds were sighted in Goronyo, Sokoto State and Kirikasama in Yobe State, their axis into Nigeria.
Dabai recalled that the birds destroyed about 35 per cent of crops in 2014, hence the federal government took steps to control their menace.
“The birds cannot be completely annihilated but the action will control them to reduce their strength,” he said.
