… Demands Rebuilding of Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded the resuscitation of the BRACED commission; an economic block comprising the South-South States of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta, in order to deliberate on issues of common interest confronting the region, especially on the economy and security fronts.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s zone F meeting held at the weekend in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The communiqué, which was endorsed by the south-south zonal Vice President of the NUJ, Mr. Edward Egude, alongside the secretary, Mr. Opaka Dokubo, also appealed to the Federal Government to urgently reconstruct bad portions along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene road, in order to ameliorate the suffering of commuters.

“The Zone F leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) having met to appraise the activities of the Union in the six South-South States (Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers Edo and Bayelsa) resolves as follows:

“It called on the South-South Governors to revive the BRACED Commission set up by the six State Governments in the Zone to discuss issues affecting the Zone.

“Commended NDDC for intervening in failed portions of the East-West Road at the Calabar axis and appealed to the Federal Government to declare emergency on the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road and mobilise contractors for the completion of the East-West road” the communiqué read in part.

The meeting, which attracted NUJ chairmen and secretaries across the zone including the host, Mr. Victor Udu, of the Cross River State council, also condemned the spate of kidnappings in the region and urged security agencies to intensify efforts  to checkmate  the menace.
