Following reports of the outbreak of polio melitis some parts of the country, Sokoto state government has taken measures against any unforeseen chances, deputy governor, Ahmed Aliyu disclosed.
Aliyu who divulged that part of the measures included the planned to immunize about 1.8million children between the ages of zero to five years across the 23 local governments of the state.
Speaking during an interactive seesion with the State Taskforce Committee on Polio immunization at Gidan Dilo village in sokoto south local government, the Deputy Governor pleaded that all hands must be on deck to help check the few cases of non compliance in the state.
The Deputy Governor, who doubles as the Chairman of the Committee commended the efforts of traditional and religious leaders in the effort towards ensuring a permanent polio free society.
“The five-day, statewide exercise was organized as an outbreak response exercise, sequel to the recent outbreaks of polio in Borno State.
”Parents in the state should therefore allow their children to be immunized against polio and other child killer diseases.
”This is the responsibility of every parent and we are assuring that the polio vaccine is safe.”
On his part the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Balarabe Kakale, noted that with sustained commitment from all stakeholders, the state will continue to thrive on its no polio status.
Dr. Kakale assured that he was very optimistic that both the state government, Sultanate Council and all stakeholders in the business of ensuring a healthy state would not be complacent in sustaining the no polio tempo
Earlier, in their separate speeches, both the Chairman of Sokoto South local government, Alhaji Aminu Liman, the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar and the village Head of Gidan-Dilo,Alhaji Amiru Abdullahi,assured of their continues commitment to the no polio status of the state.
Despite the commitment by stakeholders towards sustaining the no polio status, LEADERSHIP however observed with nostalgia that those administering the polio vaccine often marked houses without finding out if there are immunizable children in such houses.
