As part of efforts to demystify the earth tremor phenomenon in Nigeria, the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation, (OSGOF), Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG) of NASRDA, have come together and set up a technical committee that will look into incidences of earth tremor that have occurred in the country in recent times.
In a press release signed and issued by the Head, Press (OSGOF), Mrs Grace Njoku, the Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Ebisintei Awudu, who chaired an inter-agency session held in his office in Abuja, stated that the scientific investigations that will be conducted into the phenomena will also provide solutions that will greatly contribute to sustainable national development.
Recall that earth tremor rocked a part of Jama local government area of Kaduna State two weeks ago. Sometime ago too, same was reported in parts of Rivers and Bayelsa states.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the mandate of the technical sub-committee which is to be chaired by the Director, Geodesy Department of OSGOF, is to develop a roadmap towards achieving the purpose of the inter-agency initiative.
The committee shall consist of three (3) experts each from the collaborating agencies and three professors, relevant to the collaborating agencies from the academia.
Speaking on behalf of the Agencies, the Director, Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics, Dr. Tahir Yakubu, stated that the initiative was a move in the right direction it will unravel the circumstances surrounding the phenomenon and make the relevant agencies prepared towards future occurrences.
