The Borno State Government yesterday received 348 cleared Boko Haram detainees arrested at various areas of operations and camps by the Nigerian Military and found innocent of involvement in terrorism.
The freed Boko Haram suspects comprise of 114 cleared males, 107 cleared female and 127 children. Out of the 127 children of the cleared suspects , 115 are under aged between 5- 10 years while 12 are 11 years and above.
Handing over the 348 freed detainees to Governor Kashim Shettima, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brig Gen Victor Ezugwu said he was enforcing the magnanimity of the Chief of Army Staff ( COAS) by presenting the cleared suspects to Borno State Government for rehabilitation and reintegration into their respective Local Government Areas.
He however said some other suspects could not be released because they committed crimes that are civil in nature and as such would be handed over to the Nigerian Police and Department of State Services for further action.
“Amongst this category are 6 foreigners who entered the country illegally. They consist of 4 Cameroonians , 1 Chadian and 1 Jamaican . These foreigners would be handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service for deportation “, said Brig Gen Ezugwu.
Responding, the Governor thanked the Nigerian Military for releasing the suspects on Independent day.
“For the young ones, we shall immediately explore the option of taking them to the hospital before taking them to the rehabilitation centre”, said Governor Shettima.
