The crisis rocking the Ondo State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), deepened yesterday as supporters of the candidate of the party, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and that of his closest challenger, Dr Segun Abraham clashed at the party secretariat yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The violent clash between the supporters of the two top contenders for the ticket of the party in the September 3 primary lasted about two hours and paralysed social and economic activities in the ever busy Adesida/ Oyemekun road where the party secretariat was located.
The crisis led to the injury of party supporters and passersby who were running for safety so as not to be caught in the melee.
It was gathered that the crisis started when the supporters of Abraham engaged in peaceful protest in order to further demonstrate their rejection of the governorship primary that produced Akeredolu as the candidate of the party.
The protesters were armed with placards with inscriptions such as “Abraham is our Governor”, No Abraham, No election”, “With Abraham we stand” “Restore Abraham’s mandate” “Abraham is APC’s candidate”, “ Abraham is the authentic winner of September 3 primary” among others.
They moved from Fiwaye Rounabout to the party secretariat chanting various solidarity songs.
One of the leaders of the protesters who addressed journalists at the party secretariat , Mr Enas Mohammed gave reasons for the rejection of Akeredolu as the candidate of the party.
Mohammed said the National Working Committee of the party has ordered for rerun of the primary. He added that Abraham should be restored as authentic candidate of the party.
As he was addressing reporters, some party members loyal to Akeredolu stormed the secretariat with dangerous weapons including axes, cutlasses and cudgels and dislodged Abraham’s supporters from the party secretariat.
