An academic cum businessman, Dr. Ghali Mustapha has called on Nigerians to support the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to turn the economy around for a better and prosperous nation.
Mustapha made this call at a workshop on Nigerian Automotive Policy, held in Abuja on Wednesday. He said the National Automotive Policy is needed in order to check capital flight arising from the importation of second hand cars and to encourage local production.
Also speaking at the event, chief executive officer, Sokoto Transport Service, Alhaji Ladan Abdullahi said that the policy is coming at the right time and would help in alleviating the suffering of the masses and check wasteful spending on importation of vehicles.
Abdullahi solicited for more funding from the state government to enhance the performance of the Sokoto State mass transit service.
In his message to the participants, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah said the policy was approved by government to bring back automotive assembly operations and local content development which will turn Nigeria into a vehicle manufacturing country.
The director general, Nigerian Institute for Transport Technology ( NITT), Zaria, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf in his address, said the hike in tariffs of imported vehicles made it necessary to chart a new course to resolve the cost of buses and over reliance on second hand vehicles.
In a lead paper, the director general, NADDC, Engr Aminu Jalal disclosed that Nigeria spends as much as $8.5billion on importation of vehicles which he said was on the high side.
