A Former member of the Federal House of Representatives from Bayelsa State, Hon. Ebikekeme Ere has described as “misplaced” and “show of ignorance” the protest by members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) against the arrest and arraignment of Seven Judges by the operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) over alleged corrupt practices and professional misconduct.

According to Hon. Ere, the members of the Nigerian Bar Association and the critics of the DSS action against accused Judges should stop associating the constitutional action of the security agencies to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Hon. Ebikekeme Ere, who represented the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency at the National Assembly in 2003, told newsmen in Yenagoa that  though the arrest of the high profile judges may have surprised many including members of the Bar Association, the arrest bothers on National Security which is the responsibility of the DSS.

According to Ere,” Ordinarily, the National Judicial Council (NJC) is expected to deal with issues of ethics and malpractices in the court rooms, the DSS is expected to deal with issue of criminality. That means they are right to have arrested the alleged Corrupt Judges.”

“In this case, the DSS has done the right thing by arresting the alleged corrupt Judges. We should stop associating the President, Muhammadu Buhari with everything done by the Security agencies. The DSS is just a reflection of a new Nigeria being put in place by President Buhari. The DSS is functioning in line with its duties. They are empowered by law to make arrest when some activities bother on National Security.”

“When some judges are seen to have violated the laws of the land and engage in criminal activities such as corruption and misconduct, it bothers on National Security. Such judges should be arrested and tried. My advice is that such arrest and arraignment should be done in line with due processes.”

On the alleged uproar against the timing of the arrest, Hon. Ebikekeme Ere, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Leading Bayelsa Software building Company, Eresoft, said though the timing may be strange to Nigerians,” there is nowhere in the world that issues of criminality and its associated arrest of culprits are carried out at noon. It is usually at night. Check cases in advance democracies of the world, the United Kingdom ,the United States of America (USA) and others, such security operations are carried out at night.”
