The Acting Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs. Yetunde Oluremi Oni has urged youths in Osun to strive to create wealth and provide food to feed the nation.
Oni said this while addressing participants during an Agricultural summit in Ile-Ife, Osun State, tagged: “Ife Youth AgroPreneurship Summit and Presentation of Ojaja II Agricultural Hub”.
The submit was part of the initiatives of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II to engage the youths in productive venture and banish poverty and hunger in his domain.
The NAFDAC DG observed that Osun State was blessed with abundance of arable lands and urged the youths to embark on production of cash crops in line with the diversification project of the Federal Government.
She explained that cash crops such as cocoa, coffee and kolanuts could be processed and packaged for export which would yield foreign exchange for Osun State in particular and Nigeria in general.
The NAFDAC boss however warned against misapplication and misuse of pesticides and herbicides which has led to rejection of these value-added agricultural products in the international market.
She emphasized the need for sensitization and training of farmers on the appropriate use of pesticides. Oni said “NAFDAC would continue to do our best to ensure that only the right quality, safe and wholesome food products are available to the citizenry for consumption”.
Also, as part of initiatives to build confidence and ensure synergy with stakeholders in food and drugs business, the NAFDAC DG also had a meeting with various groups and individuals in Osun State and assured them of the readiness of the agency to work with them in its determination to safeguard the health of the people.
