Nyako, Son Stripped Of Traditional Titles

The Lamido of Adamawa Alhaji Muhammad Barkindo Mustafa yesterday announced that former governor of the state, Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako, and his son, Sen Abdul’Aziz Nyako, have been stripped of their traditional titles of Sarkin Yamma, and Sarkin Matasa respectively.

This move is regarded as the climax of a long standing political feud between the present Adamawa state governor, Mohammed Jubrilla Bindow and the former governor’s political dynasty.

Only last week, the state government inaugurated a committee to probe some projects of the Nyako administration.

Nyako was impeached by the state House of Assembly in 2014, but the impeachment was declared illegal by the Court of Appeal. The Court did not however order for his reinstatement.

But the Supreme Court has fixed Dec. 16 of this year as the date on which it will decide the matter of Nyako’s reinstatement. This issue has significantly pitched him against Governor Bindow.

According to a statement signed by the Lamido Adamawa, the decision to de-robe Nyako, who ab initio installed him was necessary because himself and his son have been indicted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), and arraigned before a court of law for alleged corruption.

Our correspondent gathered that the stripping of the politicians of their titles may not be unconnected with the growing closeness of the traditional ruler to Governor Bindow who is an arch-rival of the former governor.

“It is unfortunate that a traditional institution as important as this is being dragged into dirty politics. The government is just desperate to bring Nyako down especially with the way they see the Supreme Court case turning out.

“It is unfortunate that the Lamido will be used to cut the hand that made him. If they latch on EFCC case, how many traditional title holders in the same emirate would be convinced of this reason?,” the source queried.
