FCT Budgets N530m for Inclusive Education In 7 Public Schools

The Federal Capital Territory Secondary Education Board (FCT SEB), has budgeted about N530m to ensure that seven models schools, in all the FCT Area Councils are educationally inclusive to students living with disabilities. The budget covers infrastructural and educational material for the selected schools.
Special Education Teacher on Intellectual Disability, Maryann Onye made this known at the review meeting of the FCT Inclusive Education Policy Draft Committee, in Abuja. The selected schools include, Government Secondary School (GSS) Jikwoyi (AMAC), GSS Dutse (Bwari), GSS Kuje (Kuje), GSS Kwali (Kwali), GSS Dobi (Gwagwalada), GSS Yaba (Abaji), and School for the Gifted Gwagwalada.
Onye said the passionate about the accessibility of education to children with disabilities in the FCT, the FCT SEB Acting Director, Hajiya Maryam Hassan has requested the budget on noting the commitment of the FCT Special Education Services, and the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD).
However, rather than limit access to inclusive education schools to one area council, the board selected six model secondary schools in the FCT, plus the School of the Gifted, Gwagwalada to ensure children with disability in all the FCT area councils gain access to education.
She observed that the budgeted proposal subject for submission to the Permanent Secretary of Education, FCT, is a long-term project likely to span two or more tenures. However, she assures that the FCT interests in building an inclusive education system ensures its achievability.
