Police Parade Killers Of Benue Catholic Priest

The police, yesterday, paraded four suspected kidnappers for their involvement in the kidnapping and killing of Rev. Fr. John Alex Adeyi in Benue State.

The suspects, Suleiman Gina, Saidu Abdullahi, Aliyu Garba and Haruna Idi; were arrested in Enugu, Benue and Bauchi states by police detectives and paraded at the Force headquarters, Abuja.

Briefing journalists during the parade, the Force PRO, DCP Don Awunah said that consequent upon the unfortunate kidnap and gruesome murder of late Rev. Fr. John Adeyi of Catholic Diocese of Otukpo and parish priest of St. Bernards Parish, Okpoga, on April 24, 2016, after collection of ransom by vicious and notorious kidnappers, the IGP directed the Intelligence Response Team attached to IGP monitoring unit, Force headquarters to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to Justice.

“Between Spetember 1 and 14, 2016, the four suspects were trailed and arrested at different locations in Bauchi, Enugu, and Benue state. In the course of investigation, they confessed to being the gang responsible for the kidnap and gruesome murder of the Reverend Father and still went ahead and collected the ransom of N1.7million from his family.

“The deputy leader of the gang, Saidu Abdullahi, 28 years, voluntarily told the police investigators that he fired the fatal shot that killed the Reverend Father.

“The suspects led the police to a bush in Orokam area of Benue state where three guns used for the kidnap attack and murder of the Reverend Father were buried. The victims Nokia Lumia phone and another black Gicent phone model M9 were recovered from the suspects. All the suspects will be arraigned in court in due course,”Awunah explained.

The deputy gang leader who admitted to the crime, Saidu Abdullahi,  said the cleric’s death was destined.

Abdullahi, said: “We are the ones that killed the Reverend Father. He did not do anything to us and I think his death was destined. We killed him after collecting the ransom from his family because vigilante and villagers were looking for us and we felt they were coming close. So, we had to kill him.”
