The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been commended for the way it handled the screening exercise of the gubernatorial primaries in Sokoto State.

The Good Governance Project Initiative (GGPI) in a release made available to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY pointed out that the PDP was thorough in the conduct of the primaries.

The exercise had raised so much heat and controversy in the polity with some of the aspirants raising accusations against incumbent Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of causing disaffection; and thus prayed the ruling party to disqualify him.

However, the PDP North West Zone  Screening Committee headed by former Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Tijjani Yahaya Kaura sat in Kaduna on Friday and cleared all the gubernatorial contenders, namely: Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Suleiman Yusuf and Abubakar Gada.

In the words of the GGPI National President, Dr. Innocent Okadigbo, “We commend the screening committee for a professional, God fearing and thorough job. The screening of Sokoto State’s PDP gubernatorial aspirants was transparent, credible, peaceful, free and fair, democratic and thorough as attested to by media reports and other observers who witnessed the screening on Friday in Kaduna.

“The GGPI commends the screening committee for its objectivity, sagacity professionalism and fairness in handling all the issues concerning the Sokoto State gubernatorial party primaries and listening to the voice of wisdom,” the statement read.

It meanwhile further noted that, “Since all the three gubernatorial aspirants have been screened and cleared at the Zonal level, they should therefore go to the party primary polls on 17th December, 2011 to test their popularity with the people, which is the hall mark of democracy.
