The Yobe State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made a total seizure of 473.742 kilograms of illicit drugs, including 450.518kg of cannabis sativa and 23.224 kg of psychotropic substances, between January and June, 2011.
The state commander of the agency in the state, Mr. Samuel Egbeola, disclosed this at a press briefing in his office in Damaturu to mark this year’s United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
Egbeola also revealed that 124 persons, four of them women, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
He said that out of the total number of persons arrested, 46 were counseled while seven persons were convicted and jailed.
The NDLEA boss stressed that the success story so far recorded was made possible by the assistance of, and cooperation of, other stakeholders in the fight against illicit drugs such as the police force and the State Security Services (SSS) which provided intelligence, arrested, seized and transferred suspects and substances to the command.
Others include the state and local governments, the press which, he said, had assisted in making the efforts of the command known to the public and creating the necessary awareness.
He expressed surprise at the increasing involvement of females in the illicit drug business pointing out that in 2010, only two women were arrested in connection with drug abuse and trafficking in the state and wondered why their involvement increased by 50 per cent this year.
