Maria Sharapova has confirmed she will play for Russia in first round of 2012 Fed Cup.
She said she will play in Russia’s Fed Cup first-round tie against Spain in February.
The world number four will compete at the Australian Open before heading to Moscow’s Olympic Arena on the first weekend in February. “Not sure if everyone knows, but I will be playing Fed Cup for Russia versus Spain after Australia,” Sharapova said on her official website. “So glad we get to play in Moscow! I will have four weeks in the Australian summer and then a week in the Moscow winter.”
The Florida-based player last represented her country in February 2011 when she went down in straight sets to France’s Virginie Razzano in the Fed Cup quarter-finals.
The 24-year-old was replaced for the reverse singles as Russia went on to win the tie 3-2 en route to their final defeat to the Czech Republic in Moscow in November.
