A group, Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN)has expressed worry that the man who allegedly raped 11year old, Deborah Ezuma, Mr. Kelechi Iroha, a business man has been granted bail for N500,000.
According to a release issued by NOPRIN in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the victim who was said to be hawking food item on December 6, 2011 at Okigwe on the day of the incident and was approached by Mr Iroha to buy the item she was selling.
After buying the item as the release further stated, Mr Iroha asked the girl to accompany him to where she would receive the payment for the item.
But unfortunately as it was alleged, it was a bait to lure her to the place where she was coerced and raped by Mr Iroha who is said to be a building material merchant and a married man.
As the release further stated, the rape which lasted till the following morning saw family and friends of little Deborah searching for her.
The girl according to NOPRIN was later found in her village where she was reported to have regained consciousness. After narrating to her guardian, Mrs Emilia Ogbuehi of her predicament, she was said to have been taken to Okigwe General Hospital where she was treated for bruises and inflammation on her private part.
NOPRIN further revealed to LEADERSHIP that after the girl had identified her victim, he was subsequently arrested but they added that they were surprised when he was released on bail almost immediately.
The Divisional Police Officer of Okigwe who confirmed the incident claimed that the scene of the incident was visited and no trace could be linked to the suspect.
LEADERSHIP further gathered that the suspect who was arraigned before a magistrate court in Okigwe has been granted bail after paying the sum of N500,000 with a surety standing for him while the case was adjourned till January 20, 2012.
