Eight persons were seriously injured in a Christmas Eve road accident involving a Nissan Frazer Jeep which collided with an Audi 80 car at Betem along Calabar-Ikom highway. The Audi car burst into flames while the Jeep skidded off the road and into a ravine.
Officials of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident carried out rescue operation of the victims.
Some Nigerians were also on hand to assist in the evacuation of the injured to nearby hospitals.
The driver of the jeep who simply gave his name as, Mr. Paul, said the accident was caused by an on-coming car which tried to overtake a trailer thereby running into his lane, forcing him to skid off the road and lost control because of the bad spot on the road and collided head long with the Audi car.
