Defending champion, Rafael Nadal crushed Ryan Sweeting 6-3 6-2 6-4 to move into round three at Wimbledon.

The Spaniard and number one seed raced through the first two sets, his hitting proving far too powerful and precise for his overawed opponent.

Sweeting, the world number 69, managed to raise his game in the next and even managed to break back to make it 2-2 in the set as he threatened to fight back.

But Nadal reasserted his dominance to break again and serve out the match.

Elsewhere, Tomas Berdych, last year’s runner-up, made short work of beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau, cruising to a 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory.

Mardy Fish, the 10th seed from the United States, and France’s Richard Gasquet, the 17th seed, also progressed with straight-sets wins, but 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland was knocked out by unseeded Italian Simone Bolelli, losing 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
