The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has described as unacceptable the recent assault on one of its members and his wife, deputy registrar of ATBU, Bauchi, Comrade Andee Iheme by some soldiers in Bauchi State.

The union, in a statement by the president, Comrade Promise Adewusi, said the action was barbaric and therefore called on the relevant authority to do all they can to bring to book the perpetrators of this unruly behaviour.

Adewusi, who is also a deputy president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it was unacceptable for the soldiers to have carried out such act on innocent civilians, and demanded that the perpetrators should be brought to book publicly, and also made to imbibe the tenets of civility; otherwise, he said, SSANU would be forced to publicly protest the incident.

“The soldiers should be reminded that Nigeria in 2011 is no longer under jackboot rule,” he said, insisting that the case must not be buried under the usual guise that it is being investigated.

“We in SSANU and NLC vehemently condemn the bestiality and brutality exhibited by the soldiers,” he said, noting that if such unchecked brutality and injustice were allowed talon with the prevailing insecurity in the country, it would further pose a serious threat to peace.
