Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola has reiterated the resolve of his administration to give priority attention to educational development in the state by doling out N2 million each to 126 public schools in the state.
Fashola who disclosed this yesterday during the maiden edition of the Governor’s Education Award held in Ikeja, Lagos, said he had approved the employment of the 507 teachers earlier contracted by the state to coach secondary school students in its public schools in core subjects such as mathematics, English language, biology, physics and chemistry.
He explained that the awards were conceived to improve the quality of education in the schools across the state, just as it would make non- recipients to strive hard to challenge for honours in subsequent editions.
He said the 126 schools, consisting 64 and 62 schools from junior and senior secondary categories respectively, were selected based on their overall percentage improvement by standard implementation of the Eko Secondary Education Project.
“We have come to celebrate educational excellence, and 126 schools out of 628 public schools in the state would get N2million each. And we hope that next year, schools who did not receive would perform excellently to unseat the winners of today.”
He also announced new categories of awards for two best secondary school principals who would undertake international training courses.
He said the N13.5billion World Bank-assisted Lagos Eko Secondary Education project was geared towards strengthening the education sector in the state and noted that that it had moved from the challenge of accessing education to providing quality education.
