The Uniqueness Of Enugu Marriage

Enugu is a state that still savors societal norms, the kind that understands that money is not everything, unlike some other parts of Igbo land where a young man intending to marry would be required to purchase motorcycles, farmland, expensive fabrics and other materials for the family of his wife to be. In Enugu grooms are made to understand that girls or ladies eligible for marriage  are not for sale, but only given out in to the sanctity of marriage. This makes Enugu the of kind society where ladies brought up in the fear of God can be found.

Several communities make up Enugu and are collectively referred to as Wawa. The people of Wawa sub-Igbo are often light in complexion and indeed beautiful to behold.

They are self-effacing by nature and mostly educated, with the possession of the natural ability to co-exist with others.

They are hospitable too; known for their love of peace, restiveness can find no place to exist. The Obbolo communities are only a fraction of the larger Enugu society and can be further divided into Obbolo towns.

These communities are located just before the very end of Igbo land, sharing a border with the Idoma people of Benue State.

The Obbolo communities are perfect examples of a society that accept that women should never be sold in the name of marriage and that, from inception God made the union an easy one to enter into for the growth and multiplication of man on earth. This is one philosophy that has guided marriage in the Obbolo society.

Young men with the intention to marry are often expected to make spending within their reach unlike the expensive list often given  by the other parts of Igbo land, containing outrageously expensive and out-of-the-ordinary articles in the name of dowry.

Surprisingly the groom is never charged any particular sum leaving the decision on what bride price to give to the groom-to-be.

The more pleasant news is that Enugu women are never expensive to maintain after marriage, which is quite unlike their counterparts in other parts of Igbo land.

Once married, an Enugu woman readily spends the entire period of her life with her husband, never too demanding and also works to contribute to the well-being of her family.
