The House of Representatives Committee on Culture and Tourism yesterday sought better funding for the nation’s apex tourism development agency, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation , to replicate the tourism village in all parts of the country.
The committee members who were led on an oversight visit by Hon. Sekonte Davis, after a tour of facilities at the corporation said, “We have seen the genuine desire of the NTDC to promote and develop tourism in Nigeria at its best, but there is a constraint in space. So we need bigger space for better appreciation of the facilities here for the delight of tourists.”
He also harped on greater funding for the corporation, calling for partnership with other stakeholders in order to build tourism villages in all the states of the federation to furnish tourists with information on tourist sites and destinations, which in turn would create jobs for Nigerian youths.
Impressed by the NTDC products such as the Tourism Radio, Leisure and Exhibition Hall, Digital Studio for the production of audiovisual promotional materials, Idiri Centre, clinic and restaurants amongst others, Hon. Davis said the committee members could not help but commend the NTDC Director-General, Otunba Segun Runsewe, as well as the entire management and staff of the corporation for their ingenius role in promoting the nation’s tourism sectors. “Runsewe is doing well and we commend him, even though the National Assembly hardly commends government agencies.”
He lamented that Nigeria’s over dependence on crude oil was a dangerous trend given the fact that crude oil is exhaustible.
Earlier, Runsewe told his guests that his agency was committed to promoting tourism as a ready alternative to crude oil in Nigeria and said the caliber of people on the House Committee on Tourism and Culture showed the importance the National Assembly places on the sector.
