There are growing indications that the leadership of the Mega Progressive Peoples Party(MPPP) and the embattled former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva have teamed up to scuttle, the Bayelsa State gubernatorial election scheduled for February 11.
The MPPP has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) seeking for the postponement of the election, because it needed time to select a new gubernatorial candidate for the election following the death of its candidate last month. Under the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended, political parties have the grace of 60 days to come up with a replacement for their chosen candidate.
Timipre Sylva needs the 60 days of grace that MPPP requested to give it time to secure a favourable ruling from the Supreme Court, where he is seeking recognition as the authentic gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). This development is having its toll on the cohesion of the MPPP as some leadership of the party are opposed to the postponement of the election.
While some MPPP national executive members, believed to be loyal to President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Godfather of Seriake Dickson, the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, are insisting that the death of their gubernatorial candidate would not make any difference and a replacement not needed, others think otherwise.
The National Vice Chairman(North Central Zone),Capt. Isa Alushi (rtd),the National Vice Chairman(North-East Zone),Alh. Tukur Bichi and the National Vice Chairman,(North-West Zone),Alh. Mustapha Haruna and the National Vice Chairman (South-South zone),Mr. Efosa Edoma insisted that the INEC must respect the provision of section 36 of the Electoral Act 2010.
