Following the high number of abandoned dam projects in the country, the federal government has commenced assessment of the projects with a view to charting a way forward for the projects which are geared at improving power generation in the country.

Minister of State for Power, Darius Ishaku, gave this indication yesterday while paying an inspection visit to abandoned Wushishi/Zungeru and Kalgara Dams in Niger State.

He said that the decision was based on the government’s resolution to take up-to-date inventory of all abandoned projects, to make them useful for, at least, the immediate communities.

Ishaku said all the details of dams assessed would be reported to ensure that appropriate actions are taken by the federal government to complete the projects.

According to him, the visit to the projects would enable the government to identify and evaluate the present state of the components of the projects to ascertain the challenges and constraints hindering the operations.

Earlier, during a courtesy call on the governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu, who represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Daniel Clifford Shashere, the minister had explained his mission.

The SSG expressed the government readiness to collaborate with the federal government in ensuring that the people of the state derived benefit from the abandoned projects.
