The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji has said that successful grassroots sports development depends on the amount of attention given to it as well as the quality of personnel deployed to man the zones where budding talents abound.

He said this on Wednesday while addressing deputy directors and assistant directors who were newly deployed to the Zones as zonal coordinators.

He stated that the NSC management was committed to taking sports down to the grassroots in the most practical fashion but such good intentions can only be matched by the quality of officers posted to the grassroots.

Ekeji noted that grassroots sports development has for sometime been stunted and attributed it to various reasons, one of which was the calibre of personnel that had hitherto manned the affairs at the grassroots.

He therefore charged them to see their deployment as a deliberate effort by the NSC to ensure that sports development goes beyond mere rhetoric to practical steps as according to him, the country is blessed with abundant potentials capable of making Nigeria the best in Africa.

He them to fashion out programmes geared towards capacity building, identifying and harnessing the abundant talents which Nigeria is blessed with, organise age group competitions, seminars, workshops and public enlightenment programmes aimed at attracting the attention of senior State and local government officials to sports activities.
