Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has urged media practitioners in Nigeria to rise up and challenge corrupt leaders, in order to sanitize the system.

The governor gave the charge while welcoming the national leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its National President, Mallam Garba Mohammed, who paid him a courtesy call in his office.

``Nigerian journalists are operating in a very difficult terrain but they can also improve on their performances.

A situation where a journalist has the opportunity of interviewing anyone accused of impropriety and instead of asking that such a person faces their atrocities, such journalists praise-sing them is not good enough for probity and accountability.

``You should be bold enough to face such people and challenge them, particularly those found to be corrupt. By doing this, you will be able to rid the polity of corrupt elements,’’ he said.

The governor also stressed the need for media practitioners to be objective and to maintain neutrality in the performance of their duties, in order to command the respect of the people.
