A suitor, Usman Maizuma, 45, of Rigasa Town in Kaduna State on Wednesday, appeared before a Kaduna Sharia Court for backing out from a marriage proposal to one Halima Dangude.
Maizuma was taken to the court by his would-be mother in-law, Hadiza Dangude, 42, for requesting the refund of his N16,000 dowry 10 days to the wedding.
Hadiza told the court that the action of Maizuma had distorted preparations for the wedding.
The complainant told the court that she pleaded with her would-be son-inlaw to give them time to raise the money because the dowry had been used for the wedding preparation.
Hadiza said Maizuma refused to reason with her and reported her late husband's brother to the police because of the dowry.
She urged the court to compel Maizuma to give them time to source for the money and make refund to him.
In his defence, Maizuma said he decided to back out of the marriage proposal because of certain unbecoming attitude of Halima.
Maizuma, however, told the court that he was not intersted in disclosing the attitude and that that was the reason he humbly withdrew and requested for the refund of his dowry.
He reiterated his request for the refund of his money before the court.
In his ruling, the Presiding Officer, Khadi Ibrahim Inuwa, ordered the widow to sell the materials purchased for the wedding to refund the dowry since Maizuma was no longer interested in the marriage. (NAN)
