Two employees of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Segun Ogunyemi and Innocent Sunday, were on Tuesday charged with assault at a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Ogunyemi, 30, who resides at Amukoko in Orile Iganmu and Sunday, 32, of No. 1 Adeshina St., Aguda, are facing a three-count charge bordering on assaulting and tearing the uniform of a police officer.
Both of them pleaded not guilty.
The Investigating Police Officer, Cpl. Tela Danladi, who held brief for the prosecutor, told the court that the defendants on March 11, at Bode Thomas junction, Surulere, committed the offence.
Danladi alleged that the duo, at about 10:45 p.m. on the said day assaulted one Insp. Taiwo Adio, who was attached to the Bode Thomas Police Station.
He alleged that the defendants beat up the police officer and as a result of the assault the latter sustained injuries.
Danladi said that in the process of beating the officer, his uniform, which was a property of the Federal Government, was torn.
He said that the offence contravened Sections 171, 172(b) and 348 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Magistrate A. O. Soladoye granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case till April 18 for mention.
