The planned establishment of a Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy edged closer to reality as the House of Representatives passed for second reading a Bill for an Act to establish the college which is bandied as a first of its kind in Africa.

The school which was established by the Colonial Administrators presently has no legal framework for effective operation, the Bill's sponsor, Toby Okechukwu (Enugu/PDP) said at yesterday's plenary.

“It is unfortunate that such a school that has produced so many prominent Africans does not have a legal framework that would enable it produce internationally recognized certificates”, he said.

Okechukwu told federal lawmakers that the absence of legal backing was impeding the school from interfacing with international organisations expected to help transform the institution into a global player in dentistry and therapy.
