Borno Government on Friday said that its officials had killed a stray lion, believed to have recently killed two persons in Gujba Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe.

Alhaji Hassan Mustapha, the Borno Commissioner for Environment, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the lion was shot dead in Magumeri in Borno.

Mustapha explained that the state government was alerted by officials of Yobe Government about the stray lion last week after the incident at the Gujba.

He added that on receiving the information, the state government set up monitoring teams to look out for the lion if it crossed into Borno, through the borders.

Mustapha said that the lion was eventually spotted first in Damboa, later in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno.
He said that the lion later strayed to Magumeri where it was traced and shot dead by a combine team of wildlife officials and the police.

He said that approval was given for the killing of the animal by Gov. Kashim Shettima because of the danger it posed to the communities.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hundreds of persons were seen gathered at the Megumeri Local Government Secretariat to catch glimpse of the dead lion. (NAN)
