Former Vanguard Golf columnist Richard Animam, would be the reason teeming golf players will gather at the Ibori Golf and Country Club in Asaba from March 24.

The initiator of the Evergreen Golf Project, Honourable Daniel Mayuku said that the tournament was to make sure the late Animam’s contributions to golf are not in vain. “I have carefully watched and observed that not much has been done to honour the hardworking journalist since his demise on January 17, 2011 and we have decided to honour him with a golf event here.”

Mayuku said, quite a lot of golf followers eagerly awaited his weekly column on Saturdays in the Vanguard when he was still alive and believes that as a club, “Ibori Club has also benefited from Animam’s deliberate contributions to the growth of the game through unbiased reporting”

The evergreen golf initiative was also responsible for the memorial event that was staged for late Christian Godfrey and Ali Abdullahi in 2011. The two professional golfers died a year before on May 16, 2010 in a motor accident.

Unveiling the activities of the event he hinted that selected Nigerian professionals would be featuring in the two day event.

“Richard is a very warm personality and he has friends across the golfing circle and that is why we are inviting some of his allies in the pro rank to colour the event and have a chance to pay tribute to this fine writer who has contributed unflinchingly to the game’s development.”

The professionals would play alongside members of Ibori Golf and Country Club for the two days. The highlight of the event would be members attempt to raise some funds for the orphaned daughter of the late writer who had lost her mother earlier before Animam passed on.

“The evergreen event hopes we can help encourage golfers to remember the value that the late writer added to the game while he was with us.” He concluded.
