The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr. Mustafa Shehu has affirmed commitment to total eradication of quackery in the Engineering profession and practice.
He said only enforcement of the Engineering regulation act and creation of awareness on skills of professional engineers will eliminate quackery in the system and indeed in professional practice in other disciplines.
A statement by the NSE Head of Media and Publication, Ikenna Emeka Okpani hinted that Shehu told journalists in that quackery was an issue in the area of professional practice in the country as they were fake lawyers, journalists, Architects, accountants, etc in the country.
“It is not only in engineering that we have quacks operating. They are everywhere, in journalism, in the judiciary and all other professions. So it will take the collective efforts of all us to stop them from practicing. Part of that effort on your part will be the creation of awareness among the people so that they have information on how and where to get to the real professionals. The people should be sensitized on the disadvantages of using quacks under any guise and that is why the Nigerian Society of engineers is seeking partnership with media houses for these purpose”, he said.
The President stated that there was need to ensure enforcement of regulations in a robust manner adding that people would comply with rules not because they like to but because of the penalties that they will suffer if they don’t.
According to the statement, enforcement of the laws have not been effective, but Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has set up the Engineering Monitoring Regulation (ERM) Committee which go round to assess engineering works, determine the owners, the contractors, the consultants and ascertain their qualifications and suitability and advise the owners where necessary.
Related to this, there is a tribunal set up by COREN to investigate, try and discipline offenders who go against the engineering standards, he said.
Shehu said expatriates were supposed to be registered be registered by COREN but observed that many expatriates come in without passing through the process. It was to stem this, he stated, that the NSE was partnering with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council (NIPC) to enable the society evaluate the certificates of expatriate engineers coming into Nigeria to do business so as to register the qualified ones on entry.
