Former Super Eagles’ winger, Finidi George has revealed that a slew of top European clubs were in the running for his signature following his sparkling performances for 30-time Dutch Eredivisie champions, Ajax Amsterdam in the mid 1990s.

Finidi scored 18 goals in 85 appearances for Ajax between 1993 and 1996 before joining Real Betis in Spain.

The 40-year-old who last played competitively in 2004 has now revealed that he almost joined Real Madrid after his final season in Holland. “After the (1996 UEFA) Champions League final against Juventus, I was asked by some journalists if I would extend my contract with Ajax. My answer was misconstrued (by the journalists) and the Ajax directors were not pleased. They said they didn’t want me again and told me that they would sign a replacement which turned out to be (compatriot) Tijani Babangida,” Finidi told SuperSport.com.
