The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms. Ama Pepple has blamed the inability of the government to deliver low cost housing in Nigeria on high cost of land acquisition and astronomical cost of building materials in the country.
Pepple who spoke at the just concluded 2nd ASO Savings National Housing Exhibition said her ministry was exploring various strategies to break the barriers militating against the realisation of affordable shelter for the people.
Assuring of her commitment to realising the dream that the teeming Nigerian citizenry have roof over their heads, Pepple pointed out that her ministry had begun discussion with State governments with a view to making lands available for the construction of low cost housing.
Though the minister is saddled with the responsibility of initiating programmes and implementing government policies in the housing delivery sector, the fact that Lands Use Act vested ownership of lands in the hands of State governments has more often than not, proven to be a stumbling block.
As part of efforts to get accurate data of housing deficit in the country she hinted that the ministry is engaged in talks with Cities Alliance with a view to conducting housing census in the country.
