Unidentified gunmen on Thursday night kidnapped the wife of Senator George Sekibo at Obiri-Ikwerre, along the East-West road of Rivers State.
Sekibo represents the Rivers East senatorial district in the National Assembly.
The senator’s wife, Asime was reportedly kidnapped by a group of armed men about 6:30pm on her way to her husband’s residence in Port Harcourt.
An eyewitness said that the bandits, numbering about seven, blocked the senator’s wife on the Obiri-Ikwerre axis of the East-West road which is under construction, shot sporadically into the air to scare away other motorists and residents and dragged her out of her vehicle.
It was not clear if Mrs. Sekibo was dispossessed of money or personal belongings as they zoomed off with their victim to an unknown destination. No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
“She was driving along the East-West road when some hoodlums kidnapped and took her to an unknown destination,’’ our source said.
When contacted, the police public relations officer, Ben Ugwuegbulam could not confirm the incident, but promised to get back to our reporter as soon as he got the detail.
But a top security official who did not want his name in print confirmed the kidnap, expressing the hope that the federal legislator’s wife would be released unhurt.
Also, a top government official confirmed the incident to our correspondent on telephone, saying,” For now, there is no statement from the government. We will allow the security agents to do their work because we believe they are investigating the matter.”
