The director, FCT Agricultural Development Project (ADP), Dr. Mike Uwazie has called on farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to imbibe the culture of commercial farming rather than subsistence in order to enhance sustainable farming in the territory.
Uwazie made the call at the opening of a capacity building workshop on farm business school management held in Gwagwalada.
The workshop, organised by ADP for facilitators, extension agents and farmers was to provide opportunity for participants to understand the concept of farming for business.
Uwazie stated that the workshop became necessary following the need to educate farmers on the ongoing agricultural transformation agenda of the federal government.
He commended the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for its support in programs aimed at promoting food security in the FCT.
Also speaking, the National Facilitator, Agri-Business Development, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Oluwole Okelola called for adaptation to changes in farming in line with global trend among Nigerian farmers.
“To meet global changes in farming, Nigerian farmers must learn to cope with: changing prices of inputs and outputs; changing technology and availability of inputs; changing varieties and ways of adding values to their products,” he said.
Okelola further stated that farmers in the country needed to change from farming for their own needs to supplying markets, locally and internationally with the farm produce in other to bring about sustainability, saying “The vision of the federal government is for farmers to focus on agriculture as a business where farmers become better decision makers.”
