An unidentified man was yesterday killed in a multiple motor accident along Mpape Link Road, off Murtala Mohammed Expressway.

Four other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, in the accident, involving a truck belonging to Setraco Construction Company and three other vehicles as well as three commercial motorcycles (okada).

The spot where the accident occurred has been notorious for accidents of this nature because of the narrow and steep nature of the road.

According to an eye witness who simply identified himself as Ismaila, the truck belonging to Setraco Construction Company with Abuja registration number XD 680 KWL tried to overtake a ford van belonging to Hirah Global Concept with Lagos registration number XZ 7198 FST and in the process, both vehicles somersaulted, crushing tree motorcycles and killing one of the riders at the spot.

Other vehicles involved in the accident were a Maroon colour Audi 80 with Edo registration number DB 691 BEN and a red Volkswagen Golf car with Lagos registration number PC 749 KJA belonging to one Architect Talbest.

Talbest who spoke with LEADERSHIP said he parked his car by the roadside and went to visist a building building site along the road only to come back and meet it smashed beyond recognition.

“We came from Gwarinpa to start construction on this site and I parked my car off the road. After work, we were about to leave for Gwarinpa when we heard loud screams and we thought a riot had started, only to come out and see vehicles upside down.

Then I heard people shouting “accident” and that was when I realised that it was at the spot I had parked my car,” he said.

A police officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ikpo, who was at the scene of the accident confirmed that he saw one corpse and four seriously injured persons who had been taken to the hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He added that the incident would have degenerated to a fracas as some hoodlums wanted to take advantage of the situation to cause mayhem but for the timely intervention of the police.

A staff of Hirah Global Concept, Mr. George Chimeze said that, “The Setraco truck was overloaded with granite stones which made the driver to lost control of the truck, leading to the ghastly accident, involving our company vehicle. Our driver survived the accident, and he is presently receiving treatment at one of the hospitals in Abuja.”

Efforts to reach the truck driver failed as he was said to have fled the scene immediately the accident occurred.
