Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, (PENGASSAN) have complained of insecurity of members in Warri, Delta state.
As a result of this, the unions threatened to down tools and withdraw their services.
This is as members of NUPENG Port Harcourt Zonal Office, yesterday, began a three-day warning to protest maltreatment of indigenous workers by foreign contracting firms to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).
The warning strike which was called at the instance of the Port Harcourt Zonal office of NUPENG comprising Rivers, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Imo, Cross River, Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Enugu and Benue State, is coming on the hills of the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the affected companies on February 28, 2012, by the union’s zonal office.
In a joint petition to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, leaders of the two unions stated that they could no longer watch their members being kidnapped, raped robbed and maimed by bandits.
They called on Governor Uduaghan to provide adequate security for their members as a matter of urgency. “We are going to call an emergency meeting to take definite date on when the action would begin should the government fail to address the issue”, the unions said.
Meanwhile, at the end of its emergency zonal council in session of the Port Harcourt zone on Wednesday, the union condemned the use of security agencies by the management of the affected Iasreali firms to brutalise its members and forcefully disposes them of their identity cards while terminating their appointments without recourse to the directive of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity on the issue.
