The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, has debunked claims that the ship of state is adrift, stating however that the problem with the country is that it is being “misdirected” by some persons.

The clergy, who spoke exclusively to LEADRSHIP SUNDAY, said that he is worried at the way the country is being governed by a few persons who, he said, have selfish interests.

“The people ruling this country are all educated and they are aware of the way other countries are being run. The problem is selfishness. A few persons are really  selfish and they seem to have really taken full control. I think the nation has been taken over by powerful forces.

“You hear of a cabal and they make it sound like a joke. But what they just mean is that there are certain people who are powerful and can do what they like and get away with it and which means that there are people whose personal agenda take precedence over the agenda of the country, and those people are powerful enough to stop those in office from doing their work properly.”

Archbishop Onaiyekan said that Vision 20:20:20 would remain a pipe dream following the way the country is going, noting that Nigeria needs a government that would allow things to change peacefully.

“Anybody who must rule Nigeria must be ready to say no to certain forces and be prepared for the consequences. Nigeria needs a leader that can kill himself for the country. I don’t mean literally, but he should not be too afraid to offend X,Y,Z.

“He should call their bluff and the rest of us would join. We need to change as soon as possible because the younger generations are coming”, the clergy further admonished.
