Kaduna will stage a 2014 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Namibia despite Sunday’s bomb blast that killed 40 people, officials said.
Nigeria will host Namibia on June 2 to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
And the northern Nigeria city of Kaduna has been earmarked to host the World Cup qualifier as well as a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda on June 16.
This was partly because of the poor state of the pitch of the Abuja National Stadium, which officials said would require more than N75m (about 500,000 US dollars) to fix.
The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari, said the bomb attack believed to have been carried out by a terrorist organisation Boko Haram is not targeted at football. “I read on the pages of newspapers that there was a bomb blast in Kaduna. This situation will not stop the NFF from changing the venue of the match,” Maigari said.
