The highest handicap polo player, regarded also as the best polo player in Nigeria, Bello Buba has said he wants to win the Royal Signal Cup in the Zaria Polo Tournament scheduled for this weekend. In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP SPORTS the top polo player in the country said it’s the only trophy missing in his impressive cabinet. “I have won many cups, the high, low and medium cups. I have won all the major cups in all the polo tournaments I have participated in. The Georgian cup which is the highest polo cup in Nigeria I won it 13 times, but have never won the Royal Signal cup. The reason is that I started playing polo since 1986 and right after then, the Zaria polo club stopped hosting tournaments because of some factors. Now, the Zaria polo tournament is back after many years and the Royal Signal Cup is the biggest trophy at stake in the tournament and I am looking forward to winning it.’
He also revealed that polo is a game of practice, you have to put more effort and try to be fit, because in every game when people know you are among the best they want to see what you can do; if you are the best you have to prove you are the best so I have to practice every day. I practice to get more skills. I practice very well before any major tournament then round up everything with prayer because it is God that gives the talent.”
The Zaria Polo club will be hosting its first major tournament since 1990. It will hold from 14-21 of this month and it is also the second NPF tournament in the year after the Port Harcourt polo tournament hosted earlier in the year. The major trophies at stake in the Zaria polo tournament are Royal Signal +2 cup +8 and Above, Emir of Zazzau cup +5 to +7, Governors Cup +2 to +4, University Cup -2 to +1.
