Ageless and beautiful Joke Silva has been in the entertainment industry for almost three decades, starting her career right out of school.
She is an international actress of repute having featured in several movies and stage productions both at home and abroad.
Some of her work includes international and several Nigerian films—Secret laughter of Women, 30days, Amazing Grace, Sisters Love Letters to a Stranger, Widows Cult, Keeping Faith, White Waters to mention a few.
Joke has also written and directed critical acclaimed films, which include Digging for Gold, Jonah, The Drummer Boy and Footprints.
Born in 1961 in Lagos, to Chief Emmanuel Afolabi Silva from Isale-Eko, Lagos and Dr. Marianne Abimbola Silva, from Abeokuta in Ogun state, Joke is one of five children and although she did not live with her parents until she was five years old, she and her siblings received the best training in religion and discipline from them.
"They were always there for us, tutored and trained us on the path of greatness, “she once said in an interview.
She attended one of the best schools in Lagos, Holy Child College and after completing a degree in English from the University of Lagos, she went further to study drama at the prestigious Weber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
She flourished in radio, theatre and on television and then returned to England to complete a Diploma in Theatre Arts. She worked for the BBC while studying in London. She returned to Lagos and worked on a chat show series.
Silva is a recipient of several awards, including the EMOTAN Award by African Independent Television and the SOLIDRA Award.
She is also a member of the think tank for the Blair Commission for Africa, a trustee of advocacy for women and children, a board member and a grief counsellor for AART of Life Foundation.
There is no doubt that Joke brings a wealth of experience to the character she portrays in 30 Days. Dupe Alade is the president's most powerful minister and she has been charged with the task of untangling the mystery behind the killing of government officials.
About her work, family and other issues. She is married to Veteran actor, Olu Jacobs in 1985 and together they have very intelligent children, one of them is a director.
Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs own Lufodo Productions, a performing arts and distribution company.
Joke said she would love to be remembered as one of the people who helped put Nigeria’s acting industry on a firm footing.
Her first English movie was Mind Bending in 1990, and her first Yoruba movie was Owurolojo. Since then she has proceeded to star in over 50 films and many plays. Some films to her credit are:
