The Bauchi State Sharia Commission has confiscated about 523 cartons of assorted beers from three local government areas of the state.
The Chairman of the Commission, Malam Mustafa Baba-Illelah, made this known on Tuesday in Inkil, a settlement on the outskirts of Bauchi.
He said the consignment was seized from the Bauchi, Darazo and Jama’re local government areas and that some 215 cartons of the consignment were set ablaze in Inkil on Tuesday.
He said the remaining quantity would be destroyed later, ``while the Hisbah, the enforcement wing of the commission, continues its patrol to confiscate more of such prohibited beverages''.
Baba-Illelah said that owners of the consignments had been prosecuted and given various jail terms and fines, while the court had granted the commission the right to destroy any seized consignment.
He also announced that the commission confiscated musical drums and other enchantment instruments, which he said were dangerous to the lives of the people of the state.
Alhaji Bala Malam, the Sa’an Bauchi, who represented the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rulwanu Adamu, at the occasion, noted that every religion preached against the consumption of alcohol but that some individuals were bent on drinking it’’.
Adamu commended the commission, especially the Hisbah wing, for a job well done, and urged the commission to redouble its efforts to ensure that the drinking of prohibited beverages was stopped.
