Canada and Nigeria have concluded plans to establish a commission between the two countries. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been scheduled to be signed on Monday, 23 April, 2012 in Ottawa,capital of Canada. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has been designated to sign on behalf of Nigeria.
According to a press release made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, the MoU envisages the elevation of Canada-Nigeria relations to a strategic level of partnership covering a wide range of bilateral relations.
It was also revealed that Nigeria- Canada Bi-national commission would focus on political consultation; including good governance, economic relations, trade and investment, security cooperation, development cooperation in the area of health, education, international cooperation, etc.
In the same vein, the statement noted that the Nigeria-Canada diplomatic relations began since 1960, but was later suspended in 1995 as a result of the political situation at that time.
